Shillong: In Meghalaya, the Autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly began today at Shillong. The judicial inquiry report into the death of former HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew was laid on the House on the first day. The one-man commission of inquiry observed that the operation to arrest him at 3 am from his residence last year on 13th August was culpable of thoughtless and excessive use of force which resulted in his death that was avoidable.

The House also paid rich tributes to several political leaders who passed away recently. Speaking at the obituary, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Opposition leader Dr Mukul Sangma and other members recalled tall leaders like RG Lyngdoh, JD Rymbai and others.

On the first day of the session, the National Law University of Meghalaya Bill, Meghalaya Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (Amendment) Bill 2022 were also introduced for the consideration of the house. The Autumn Session will continue till the 16th of this month where there will be three days for private members’ business and two days for Government business.
