Bhopal: A day after Madhya Pradesh BJP chairman VD Sharma alleged that Congress leaders were unhappy with the party's policies, former chief minister Kamal Nath's son Nakul Nath removed Congress from his social media bio.
Nakul Nath's decision has fueled rumors that he and his father, Kamal Nath, are defecting to the BJP, which have been circulating for several days.
Kamal Nath is in New Delhi, and there is anticipation that he may meet with BJP officials later today. According to sources, Kamal Nath is still to determine whether he would join the BJP or just leave the Congress. However, Nakul Nath is expected to receive a BJP ticket to run in the Lok Sabha elections from Chhindwara, and the details of his joining the party are being worked out.
The experienced Congressman, however, stated that if he made a change, he would notify the media first.
"If there was such a thing, I would notify you first. It's not about denying; you're saying it, and you're all delighted. I'm not getting enthusiastic on any side, but if there is something, I'll let you know first," Mr Nath told reporters in Delhi.
Several Madhya Pradesh Congress heavyweights crossed sides earlier this week, dealing a severe blow to the party. Dinesh Ahirwar, a former MLA, and Rakesh Katare, the Congress District President from Vidisha, joined the BJP on February 12.
VD Sharma, the BJP's state president, stated yesterday that the party's doors are open to other top Congress leaders who are aggrieved over the party's rejection of the invitation to the 'Pran Pratishtha' event at Ayodhya's Ram Temple.
When asked about Kamal Nath joining the BJP, VD Sharma replied, "So today I am telling you the environment, we have kept our doors open because there are people in Congress who believe that Congress boycotts Lord Ram, and India has Ram in its heart." When Congress attacks him, there are people who are hurt, unhappy, and deserve a chance.
"If those whose names you are taking have pain in their hearts, then they are also welcome," Mr Sharma said at a news conference in Bhopal on Friday.
Earlier this month, Nakul Nath, Madhya Pradesh's only Lok Sabha Congress MP, announced himself the party's candidate for the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat. The party has made no public announcements yet.
"This time, I shall be your Lok Sabha candidate. Rumours are circulating about whether Kamal Nath or Nakul Nath would run in the election; I would want to clarify that Kamal Nath will not run, but I will," stated Nakul Nath while addressing a crowd.
Chhindwara has traditionally been a stronghold for Kamal Nath, who served nine consecutive terms. Despite the BJP's success in the other 28 seats in the state, Nakul Nath won the Chhindwara seat in the 2019 election.
