Face Hair-Raising Issues
On the face of it, the 5000 odd members of the Karnataka branch of the All India Hair and Beauty Association (AIHBA), seem not to have any challenges. But that is just the make-up. They have been putting up a brave façade, even as their growth has been restricted due to lack of encouragement and support by the government.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, the President of AIHBA, Karnataka, Smt. Ganga Sridhar has sought assistance to the members of the Association, most of whom are women and their full potential has not been tapped. Seeking women’s empowerment, the AIHBA has urged the government to simplify and streamline the licensing procedure for parlours, instead of making women owners run from pillar to post to comply with necessary regulations.
The other demands include granting equal access to government schemes meant for women’s empowerment; free government insurance scheme to all members; access to loans and subsidies to parlours run by women to enable business growth; creating opportunities for upgrading skills; pension for women who have served the industry all their lives; and support to the association in its activities such as workshops, seminars and exhibition.
The AIHBA President said that many women entrepreneurs were struggling due to lack of assistance, including financial, and it was time the government stepped in to boost the growth of the sector, while empowering women at the same time.
Mega event lined up :- The AIHBA is organising a mega event on August 10 where, not just a fashion show is organised, but also various competitions at the Prestige Sri Hari Khoday Auditorium, near Konanakunte Metro Station. The event while it is celebratory in nature, will also dwell on the challenges faced by members of the association.
