Merapani in the Golaghat district, located along the Assam-Nagaland inter-state border, has been witnessing a spurt in illegal liquor trade which has been increasing on a day-to-day basis in the area. Even when the Excise Department of Assam Government is taking a tough stand to control the illegal trade, it continues to prevail in several villages of Merapani.

Taking note of the illegal liquor trade, the 142nd battallion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) based on intelligence inputs launched an all-out drive in various villages under the jurisdiction of Merapani Police Station on Tuesday.During the operation, a large cache of liquor was recovered. In the operation led by the Sector Commandant of CRPF's 142 Battalion, the recovered liquor was later destroyed.As per inputs, over 4000 litres of illicit liquor were destroyed, that too right next to their manufacturing units. Charaimari, Ghiladharichuk, and Ratanpur were among the villages where raids were conducted by the CRPF team.
